As was the case with Secret Agent Clank, the PS2 version provided low graphics, glitches, clunky controls, and a shoddy camera. When it was ported to the PS2 however, there were no significant changes made, meaning it wasn’t equipped to run on the larger console. Several critics gave Size Matters a perfect score and even called it the best Ratchet & Clank game to date. It was praised for its stunning visuals in comparison to its PlayStation 2 counterparts, as well as fluid animation and fantastic level design.

While the PS2 version barely scraped second last on the list, the PSP port would’ve barely missed out on breaking the top five. Size Matters was the game that almost had me including separate entries for each port. #12 Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (2008) PS2 & PSP – 62% Those who own a PSP and a burning passion for Ratchet & Clank may want to seek this out, though we at the Knowledgeable Idiots wouldn’t recommend it. The PSP port was saved by its controls system, while its storyline retained a strong link to the rest of the series, despite lacking flow within the title. Disjointed gameplay, long mediocre stretches, and sluggish camera are just some of the reasons Secret Agent Clank just didn’t translate to an audience. The PSP port would’ve crept slightly higher on the list, claiming a 72% average, although complaints remained relatively similar. Seems even those who appreciated this game still weren’t impressed. Playstation: The Official Magazine rated this game the highest, reaching 70%, despite remarking “It’s best attribute is its price – half that of the PSP game”. Although, it is quite short, requiring just under eight hours to complete the main story, and 11 to complete everything. The game was judged largely on its poor controls, glitches and pacing issues. They go on to recommend playing “one of the far superior” games or mowing the lawn. Initially ported to PSP a year prior, the PS2 release received mixed reviews with one critic over at GameFocus claiming Secret Agent Clank has “zero value”.

Midway through the Future series, Ratchet’s righthand robot was given his own opportunity to shine in 2009 with Secret Agent Clank.

I wasn’t going to include spin-offs either but then all three series spin-offs appear in the BOTTOM FOUR, so my hand was kinda forced there. Games which appeared on handheld are ranked via their console release with a note about their handheld release added. Also, there’ll be no mobile games, meaning no Going Mobile or Before the Nexus. The rankings are based on Metacritic scores so if your favourite title ranks lower than you think, take it up with them. *A couple of ground rules before we get into it.

At time of publishing, the PS4 remaster of the first title is free via Play at Home, and it seems to perfect time to have a look back over the highs and lows the series has to offer. Now, almost 20 years on, we eagerly await Insomniac’s first steps into the next generation with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Even in 2002, Ratchet & Clank showed off excellent weapon and combat mechanics, and a very fun gameplay style. The latter presented bigger, more traversable worlds than Crash, and the linear fun story both series had lacked. Luckily, Sony had the aces up their sleeve that were Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank. Both had amassed a huge 91/100 Metacritic score for the third game in each series, before dropping to the mid-60s in their next major title. The genre pioneers, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, had both suffered a devastating blow, shortly after each series had hit their highest of highs. Everybody’s favourite lombax and robot duo, Ratchet & Clank, came to PS2 at a time when mascot 3D platformers were all the rage, though in desperate need of a boost.
